Theatre group offering ‘Camp Rock’

Maricopa Community Theatre is hosting a summer program for children ages 8 to 19. Students will learn the process of creating strong character through performance, and student actors will explore voice, movement and expression, character analysis and theatrical production.

At the end of the program, students will perform Disney’s Camp Rock, the musical for the community. This will be a unique opportunity for students to perform in a community theatre production and to learn the technical side of theatre, assisted by acting coaches, a choreographer, director and musical director.

Unlike the original Camp Rock, this musical production tells the story of Camp Rock 2. This summer at camp was supposed to be all about the music and having the time of their lives,  but the new, flashy Camp Star across the lake threatens Camp Rock’s very existence.  To keep the doors open, Mitchie steps up, rallies her fellow Camp Rockers and gets them in top shape for the ultimate showdown.

Based on the hit Disney Channel original movies Camp Rock and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” this production will fire up the stage with over a dozen songs, including “This Is Me,” “Can’t Back Down,” “It’s On” and “We Rock.”

The five-week camp begins June 20 and runs Monday-Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. with performances for the community July 21, 22 and 23.

Four hours a day, four days a week, for five weeks for only $60. Auditions for character placement will be held on June 15 and 16. Everyone who enrolls in the class will be cast. Students will be shown a brief dance by our choreographer and asked to sing. They can sing anything, even “Happy Birthday,” just to give a brief sense of their voice.

“We are very excited and ready to rock,” said artistic director Carrie Vargas.
