Sprinklers aid firefighters at Sonic

When Maricopa Fire Department crews arrived at the Sonic at 6:10 a.m. Monday there was zero visibility and heavy smoke was coming from the roof, said Brad Pitassi, fire department spokesman.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which was near the fryers in the kitchen but did not spread to the walls, Pitassi said.

“This was a case in which the sprinkler system worked,” he said, keeping the fire small and easier to manage.

It took crews approximately an hour to finish cleaning up the scene and remove smoke from the building.

The fast-food restaurant is at 21470 John Wayne Parkway.
