Maricopa guild to exhibit their ‘passion for quilting’

Quilting as a craft—and a passion—has been around for centuries. No two quilts are ever exactly the same because each reflects the artistry and skill of the creator.

On May 7 the Friends of the Maricopa Public Library and the city of Maricopa will offer an exhibit showcasing the genre of quilting. Maricopa’s quilt guild, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilts, will be exhibiting quilts they have made or ones passed down through their families.

“The Friends of the Library’s goal is to promote cultural awareness by supporting the library, the historical society and promoting the arts. We would like to feature various art forms and artists throughout the year to encourage a greater understanding and appreciation of the arts,” said Judy Babcock, a member of both the Friends and the quilt guild.

Under the direction of Ivan Pour, the Maricopa High School Orchestra will be providing chamber music for the show, and refreshments will be provided.

Artists will be available to answer questions about their work or quilting in general. Quilts, wall hangings and table runners displayed will range from the traditional to beaded art. Landscape and portrait quilts are currently in fashion, but traditional quilts never go out of style.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilts was ‘pieced together’ in September 2007 by Friends of the Library members Peggy Bemis, Gerry Ryan and Judy Figgins to unite others with the same passion and love for fabric and quilting.

Beginning with nine women, the Sisterhood now has 32 members who share laughter, food and quilting. Recently the group crafted and donated a quilt auctioned off at the Seeds of Change-Against Abuse Gala.

Maricopans are invited to enjoy the exhibit and local artists’ passion for quilting. For additional information, contact Babcock at 602-909-5851
