‘Maricopa, My Hometown’ now on exhibit at library

Local artist Dave Wilhelmsen’s exhibit “Maricopa, My Hometown” is on display at the Maricopa Public Library until May 28.

Wilhelmsen grew up in Staten Island, New York, and had lived in larger cities all his life until the family moved to Maricopa in June 2006.

While residing in those bigger cities, Wilhelmsen used his artwork to capture both the local landscape and landmarks. ”However, over time with development many of those same places have been replaced and soon forgotten,” said Wilhelmsen. “Today, living in Maricopa, I also see changes happening within a short time with all the development as the city grows.”

The artist’s new series of drawings and paintings of Maricopa depicts various scenes that have interested him since moving here.

“Capturing the local flavor of this town and its charm was what I hoped for,” Wilhelmsen said, indicating his love for the openness of the desert and the expanse of the nearby Estrella Mountains.

“I feel this is my hometown now, and that is why the series is titled “Maricopa, My Hometown.”
Through my art I hope to inspire my fellow neighbors to call Maricopa their hometown also,” Wilhelmsen explained.
