UPDATE: Toddler attacked by dog in stable condition

The toddler attacked by two dogs Saturday is in stable condition at a Valley hospital, Officer Jenny Alsidez, acting spokeswoman for the Maricopa Police Department, said Tuesday.

The toddler and his older brother were attacked by the dogs while being watched by a family friend at a residence at approximately 12:40 p.m.

The dogs, both pit bulls, currently are in rabies quarantine, said Alsidez.

Pinal County Public Information Officer Heather Murphy said if the owners claim the dogs there would be court hearing to decide whether the animals will be given back to the owners with restrictions or turned over the county.

The dogs escaped from the bedroom where they were locked in when the babysitter opened the door to get something. 

The attack lasted less than a minute as the babysitter intervened almost immediately. 

Still, the toddler suffered life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital. 

If the dogs are turned over to the county, they will be euthanized because of their involvement in what Murphy called a “vicious unprovoked attack.”

Alsidez said there have been no arrests; the case still is under investigation.
