Maricopa seniors and youth have new home

377

The city of Maricopa once again has shown it is for all age groups in an attempt to provide recreational venues for Maricopans.

All seniors will now have a place to go to meet others, enjoy a game of cards, Hand and Foot, Dominos, or just sit and talk or watch TV with others our same age. This is all thanks to Councilman Marvin Brown. Marvin knew the city owned a building (an old church) that was empty and convinced the city to clean it up and let the seniors use it in the morning and the youth in the afternoon. It has two large rooms, a kitchen and storage.

The building is the Copa Center, located at 44585 Honeycutt, just east of John Wayne Parkway. It will be overseen by the Maricopa Parks and Recreation Department. Parking is limited in the back, but the city will be providing additional parking to the east of the center in the next few months.

There will be all kinds of events scheduled for the mornings, such as Pinochle, Yoga, Genealogy, Line Dance, Weight Loss, Arts & Crafts, Bridge, Music, Bunco, Tai Chi and educational events. There is a kitchen so one can have morning parties or just sit with a friend, watch TV and/or have a cup of coffee/tea with someone. There will not be alcohol drinking, guns or smoking.

I hear all the time, “I have to work and my mother and/or father who lives with me sits home all alone all day.” If you need a ride, someone will be more than glad to pick you up and return you home. Just get out of the house!

The Copa Center will be available to all seniors every morning, five days a week, starting in January (we think). A schedule will be posted regarding the opening and when activities are planned.

A multi-generational facility is planned for seniors, youth and all Maricopans in the future. This will be wonderful. Our thanks to our city council men and women for looking and planning ahead.

Maricopa is a wonderful place to live.
