Maricopans will be ringing in 2008 this week. High school sports are still in action although classes do not begin until Monday, Jan. 7, and the school district will break ground Friday on Maricopa’s second middle school.

Monday, Dec. 31:
Church Theater Network launches the new Randy Travis film “The Wager” at Maricopa Assembly of God at 8 p.m. tonight. The free viewing is open to everyone. Veggie Tales movies, crafts and snacks will be provided for the kids. Maricopa Assembly of God is located at 20038 Taft Avenue on the corner of Taft and Madison. Happy New Year!

Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 19235 W. Gunsmoke Road every Tuesday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Jan.3:
Networking Maricopa’s Thursday group meets at the offices of the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce. Networking Maricopa is a group of Chamber member men and women committed to support each other through lead sharing and cross promotion. Alcoholics Anonymous meets at the First Baptist Church of Maricopa, just south of the tracks on John Wayne Parkway, from 7 – 8 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 4:
Maricopa Unified School District will hold groundbreaking ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. for its second middle school, located in Tortosa on Murphy Rd.

Ram varsity boys’ basketball takes the home court at 7 p.m. against Santa Cruz; the freshmen play at 4 p.m. and the junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.

Maricopa High’s girls’ basketball teams are away at Santa Cruz. Freshmen play at 4 p.m., junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

The wrestling Rams will be at Marana High School for a tournament today and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Maricopa’s adult softball Bat Buster Tournament begins today through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

Saturday, Jan. 5:
The Maricopa High boys’ soccer team will meet Wickenburg away at 1 p.m. for a regional match up.

Girls’ high school soccer will be at home in a 1 p.m. match with Valley Christian.

Maricopa Parks and Recreation Department hosts Junior Suns (ages 4-12) basketball games today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
