The Maricopa Fire Department responded around 11 a.m. to a near drowning at a residence on West Jean Drive in the Thunderbird Farms subdivision.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a 1-year-old girl conscious and acting appropriately, according to a released statement.

The mother told fire department personnel she had found the child face down in the bathtub and estimated the baby had been alone for about three to four minutes. Though the girl appeared and acted OK, she was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for further evaluation due to the estimated time of submergence.

The fire department reminds residents it is important that young children be supervised at all times while around water, whether in a pool or bathtub. Short duration submergence can cause traumatic results up to and including loss of life.
