MHS swimmers wrap up regular season, eye state meet

Eight school records fell as the Maricopa High School swim team hosted its last meet of the regular season, a dual with Corona del Sol at Copper Sky.

“Corona del Sol is a formidable team,” MHS head coach Laura Logan said. “Our swimmers competed very well. Our guys set five new school records, and our girls set three new school records.”

Juniors Nolan Ford and Connor Schrader each took down two MHS records. Schrader won the 100 freestyle in 49.77 and the 100 backstroke in 56.89. Ford was first in the 50 freestyle in 21.66 and third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.09.

In taking third in the 400 free relay, the team of Schrader, Andrew Varga, Rafe Scoresby and Ford set another school record.

Other boys finishing third were Varga in the 500 free, the 200 medley relay team of Schrader, Ford, Abel Rodriguez and Varga, and the 200 free relay team of Geric Kramarczyk, Victor Moreno, Rodriguez and Scoresby.

The boys finished second to Corona del Sol, 124-46.

The MHS girls’ team was also second, 130-40.

Senior Olivia Byers took second in the 200 free in a school-record time of 2:12.43. She was also second in the 50 free. Freshman MacKenzie Fair swam second in the 500 free and lowered the MHS record to 5:58.6. Sophomore Katelyn Owens was second in the 100 breast.

The 200 medley relay team of Fair, Owens, Dorianne Hames and Byers finished third and set a school record of 2:09.03.

Also finishing third were Fair, Owens, Hames and Byers in the 200 free relay, and Sophia Occiine, Isabella Piwowar, Emily Hollingsworth and Aubree Wittemann in the 400 free relay.

MHS, which competes in Division I (the state’s largest school category), has its state qualifying meet Oct. 31 in Williams Field. The state championship meet is Nov. 6 at Skyline.
