Maricopa Assistant Police Chief Kirk Fitch announced today he will retire effective Dec. 15.

The announcement came in an email sent by Fitch to fellow members of the police department.

“With Chief Melvin moving on to Salt River, I told the city manager that it was only fair that the next chief be allowed to pick his/her leadership team,” Fitch wrote. “I am extremely proud of my law enforcement career in Arizona and I wish both agencies I have served only the best in the future.”

Fitch began his law enforcement career in Arizona in 1986 when he attended the Phoenix Regional Police Academy. After graduating, he went on to complete 20 years of service with the Phoenix Police Department and retired to start MPD, where he has worked for five years.

He said his immediate plans are for him and his wife, Laura, to join their daughter in Montana for a while, where he has sought an employment opportunity.
