The process of hiring a new police chief for Maricopa will likely take until July 2012, City Manager Brenda Fischer said today in a released statement.

Fischer said a national search will be conducted to find the best candidate.

Police Chief Patrick Melvin announced Thursday he will retire after five years of service to the city.

But before a permanent police chief is hired, an interim police chief will be hired who will not be a candidate for the permanent position. An external selection will be made for that position, she said.
