A man who barricaded himself inside a home in the 43000 block of Colby Drive came out with his hands up about 12:30 p.m. today, ending a 2 ½-hour ordeal that included Maricopa police, a Pinal County SWAT team and the closure of a road in the Rancho El Dorado development.

The 38-year-old man was unarmed when he came out of the house and police took him into custody. Maricopa Fire Department spokesman Jon Sheaffer said the man was uninjured but was being taken to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix for a psychological evaluation. SWAT team members went into the house to make sure it was safe.

During the barricade, police were trying to communicate with the man using a loudspeaker, said Maricopa police spokesman Ricky Alvarado.
Traffic on Vintage Drive is expected to be open by around 1 p.m.; it was closed between Rancho El Dorado Parkway and Smith-Enke Road during the incident.

Alvarado said police are not releasing the man's name at this time.

About 10 a.m. Maricopa police officers responded to a “welfare check” after a family member called about a male in a house on Colby Drive. The caller told police the man was mentally ill and that there were weapons in the house.

When police arrived at the home they talked to the man but during that conversation he decided he didn’t want to talk further and went into the house. The police then heard a gunshot.

Alvarado said police do not think the weapon was fired at them. There was movement in the house after the weapon was fired.

While it previously was reported the man had a rifle, Alvarado said police are not sure what kind of weapon he has.

Police have not responded to the house before, Alvarado said.

Neighbors were asked to stay in their homes MPD, Maricopa Fire Department, Pinal County sheriff officers and a PCSO SWAT team, Southwest Ambulance and MPD volunteers are on scene.
