UPDATE 7:55 p.m. June 12, 2025 A heated exchange over speeding — and a mistaken belief that a gun was involved — triggered the swarm of flashing red-and-blues that raced into Maricopa Meadows this evening, police said.

Around 6 p.m., multiple patrol units responded to the 45000 block of West Dirk Street after 911 callers reported that a man had been seen yelling and allegedly pointing a firearm at a silver sedan. But according to Maricopa Police Department spokesperson Monica Williams, the incident appears to have stemmed from a verbal confrontation between a pedestrian and a driver suspected of speeding through the neighborhood.

Williams said the man walking his dog confronted the driver, which escalated into a verbal dispute. The driver exited the vehicle, and the situation became heated enough that witnesses believed a gun may have been involved. “There possibly was a weapon involved,” Williams told InMaricopa. “That’s why we responded with so many officers. Obviously there were some threats exchanged, but the individual who was potentially speeding through the neighborhood was not on scene anymore.”

The incident prompted a coordinated police response, with officers blocking off Dirk Street and canvassing neighbors. One resident, Chuck Mullins, said police came to his home, having matched him to a suspect’s description. In a social media post, Mullins described one officer standing outside his window with a hand on his gun while another knocked on the door. “I was … sick of saying, ‘It’s not me,’” he wrote.

Police ultimately determined there was no ongoing threat. Williams confirmed that no gun was found and that the person who had been suspected of brandishing it had already left the scene. “We have no reason to believe there’s a danger to the community. We are all cleared,” she said.

ORIGINAL STORY: Police swarm Maricopa Meadows after neighbors report seeing gun

(First InMaricopa) A traffic-related dispute in the Maricopa Meadows brought a heavy police response this afternoon.

At least seven Maricopa Police Department units were blaring sirens and running emergency lights as they sped south on John Wayne Parkway at 6 p.m. to a home on the 45000 block of West Dirk Street. There, residents had reported a “dispute between two parties over speeding in the neighborhood,” an MPD spokesperson told InMaricopa.

Multiple neighbors told reporters there was a gun involved. A neighbor said he saw a man “pull a gun,” while another saw a man “chasing another man with a gun.” Asked directly, police did not confirm or deny that claim: “We are actively working the call,” the spokesperson said.

Road rage has been the catalyst in several recent shootings in Maricopa or by Maricopans in recent months.

Casa Grande Police Department surrounded a Desert Cedars home and arrested a former Maricopa High School QB accused of drive-by shooting in that city on March 15.

Arizona state troopers arrested two men accused of different drive-by shootings on State Route 347 in April. One allegedly opened fire through his windshield, while the other is said to have shot another man in the hand. Both men live in Maricopa city limits.

Maricopa police are also investigating another road-rage shooting in The Lakes at Rancho El Dorado less than two weeks ago. A shooter in that case remained at large.

Maricopa police have responded to the same section of Dirk Street where violence was reported today several times in the recent years. A 24-year-old man was found stabbed to death in the backyard of one home April 29 last year, and that case remains cold.

On Feb. 23, officers responded just a few houses down after a boy named Estaban Valenzuela reportedly held a gun to his brother’s head. Valenzuela was later shot and killed Nov. 22 in what police believe was a drug-related robbery gone wrong.

InMaricopa mapped recent gun violence, largely tied to road rage, last month and found the Maricopa Meadows area was one of two hotspots in the city.
