The Maricopa Republican Club hosted its 4th Annual Golf Tournament at the Duke golf course on May 14.

“It was a beautiful day where everyone had a great time golfing and raising monies for the two charities,” said Marty Hermanson, chairman of the Maricopa Republican Club golf tournament committee. This year’s tournament had many opportunities for golfers to win prizes and money, including four opportunities for a hole-in-one to win a Hyundai Sonata car, Nike irons, a Panasonic 32” plasma TV and a $500 Visa gift card.

A shooting contest was held on hole 18; there was a putting contest where three contestants were drawn for a chance to win $50,000 each and 20 contestants were drawn to hit a hole-in-one from 135 yards for another $50,000 each. “I wish someone had won any of these opportunities for prizes or money, but no one did,” Hermanson said. “Someone winning something big at a golf tournament spreads around excitement throughout the city and surrounding areas.”

“We, as a committee, decided on two charities for this year’s golf tournament,” said Brenda Hermanson, president of the Maricopa Republican Club. One of the charities was the 100 Club, and the other was the American Legion of Maricopa. The Maricopa Police Department presented the colors for the opening ceremonies on behalf of the 100 Club, and American Legion members led the Pledge of Allegiance. Both charities were also at the luncheon where they spoke about who they are and how they would spend the money raised.

“We raised a lot of money on the contests, raffle and silent auction,” Hermanson said.

“Thanks to all who participated in this year’s golf tournament. Because of all the support, we were able to raise monies for our two charities,” said Hermanson. On Friday, at the Duke golf course, the Maricopa Republican Club and golf tournament committee presented both charities a total of $3,000. Marty Hermanson presented a check in the amount of $1,500 to American Legion Post Commander Jack McLain and other American Legion members in attendance, saying, “I hope this money will help in all your efforts as an organization.”

McLain thanked the group for their generous contribution. “This money will go to help many people in the military and others in need.”

Representing the 100 Club was Bill Weigt, a Peoria detective who was injured in the line of duty in 2005 when shot while in pursuit of a suspect. He was paralyzed from the chest down, and the 100 Club assisted Weigt and his family in rebuilding their lives. Republican Cub board members and the golf tournament committee presented him with a check in the amount of $1,500 for the 100 Club.

Hermanson thanked  tournament committee members Brenda Hermanson, Mike Robertson, Jerry Hunt, Kathy Burlinghame, Larry Burlinghame, James Dawson, Bridger Kimball, Suzette Greg and all the volunteers who helped make “this year’s tournament a success.”
