Rotary pool opens Thursday

Recently Rotary pool was deemed "an essential part of the community" and was awarded a grant from the city in order to ensure the pool would open this summer.

Not only was Rotary pool described as essential, but, historically, it’s been a part of the community since the 1950s. It is the only pool open to the public and has worked with the city to provide swimming programs for residents of every generation.

“The grant allowed Rotary to hire a pool manager to oversee and organize a great full-time summer program,” said Cecilia Estrada Ashe, Rotary Club president. “It will also allow us to hire seven individuals for the summer at an economic time when jobs are greatly needed.  The money will help pay these individuals, as well as allow more programs and open swim time for the community.”

Long-time resident, Elysa Pevler, will be the new pool manager and has been a part of the pool activities from a young age. Her responsibilities will be to oversee pool maintenance, concessions and lifeguards. She will also be in charge of pool pass sales and pool party rentals.

The pool will have a soft opening this Thursday, and, officially, kids can begin belly flopping and doing cannonballs on Friday. However, to deter those dangerous water entries, the pool will also offer Beginning Dive and Technical Endurance. A possible swim team is being explored as well.

Those interested in a class may register at the city website www.maricopa-az.gov>Recreation Classes & Events>Aquatics.
