Want to be part of a new world record?

On Thursday, Nov. 13, Santa Cruz Elementary School will be participating in the World Sport Stacking Association’s 2008 Stack Up Day.

The event is an attempt to break the Guinness world record for the amount of people stacking cups in a day worldwide.

The current record stands at 143,000.

Each participant must commit to 30 minutes of cup stacking for his or her time to qualify.

On hand at the school that day will be a representative from Guinness to verify the number of people who are stacking cups.

“This is the third year this organization has tried to break the record, and we are proud to be part of it,” said Tracy Dyll, physical education teacher at Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz will be the only school in Maricopa participating, but there will be numerous other schools in Arizona and across the nation taking part.

Those interested in participating must show up at the school, 45012 W. Honeycutt between the hours of 8:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

“Sport Stacking or cup stacking has been around nearly 10 years and keeps growing in popularity. We teach it to develop motor skills, promote eye-hand coordination, reinforce perseverance and practice, to emphasize the value of teamwork and best of all to have fun,” said Dyll.
