Skate shop rolls out of existence

Maricopa skate shop Phenom Boardworks will be closing its doors for good today.

The full-service board shop opened nearly five months ago and had sales decent enough to pay the rent the first three months, but it has not been able to keep those sales going, according to the store’s owner Mat Halliday.

“I told myself if things didn’t pick up around Christmas, I would close the doors,” Halliday said.

To help move some of the inventory he has, Halliday will be offering 50 percent off all t-shirts in stock today.

Despite the failure of the shop, Halliday remains confident that the city could support a skate shop in the future.

Once the skate park opens, there is going to be a larger demand for a shop because when people are boarding and break something, they tend to go to the closest shop,” Halliday said.
