Time running out for Presidential Primary voter registration

If you are not a registered voter, but you are interested in voting in the upcoming Presidential Preference Election (PPE), you have until Monday, January 7, to register to vote.

County Recorder Laura Dean-Lytle said that only Republicans and Democrats can participate in the upcoming PPE, which will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008.

“The regulations are different for the PPE,” Dean-Lytle said. “You must be a registered member of either the Democratic or Republican Party to vote. Independents and No Official Party (NOP) registrants are not allowed to vote.”

With the vast number of candidates looking to be the next President of the United States, the County Recorder thinks there will be more interest than usual for the 2008 PPE.

“We will probably see right around 30 percent or so voting this time around,” Dean-Lytle said. “I also think we’ll see some Independents or NOPs switch to one of the parties so they can vote on February 5.”

The Voter Registration Department has already been busy mailing out new voter identification cards to the people who are registered in Pinal County. The County Recorder expects business to pick up substantially in the upcoming year.

“We’re busy right now getting people registered for the upcoming PPE,” Dean-Lytle said. “As in other election years, we’ll be quite busy until the end of next November.”
