No more left turns off Honeycutt onto SR 347

Drivers soon won’t be able to make a left turn from Honeycutt Road onto State Route 347, said Brent Billingsley, director of development services for the city.

Eliminating the left turn is another step in what’s been a long process of the city eventually widening Honeycutt Road and making the intersection safer overall.

“We’ve been hoping to get to elimination of those left-hand turns for quite some time,” Billingsley said.

The problem intersection has plagued morning commuters who get backed up behind drivers hoping to turn left and travel southbound on State Route 347.

“Over any other intersection in the city, I am confident we get more complaints over that intersection,” Billingsley said. “At one time we were getting 20 phone calls a week.”

Before the change, Billingsley said the city needs to coordinate an information campaign so drivers have plenty of advance notice of the changes.

It’ll start with some signage that will “direct people who want to travel southbound on (State Route) 347 a safe way to do so.”

More information will be available by the end of the month, he said.

Meanwhile, a sign on Honeycutt directing traffic about the change was turned off to give the city more time to get the word out.
