For a tree farm fire in Hidden Valley, it’s a slow burn.

The usually verdant palm tree canopy at Thunderbird Farms has been enshrouded in smoke since Sunday. In an interview, the Thunderbird Fire District chief told us the blaze could continue to crackle for more than another week.

After three days, some of the palm tree nursery is charred to ash. On Monday, Maricopa residents smelled smoke in town as plumes rained into their lawns and pools.

Crews from at least three municipal, rural and Indian fire departments contained the fire and are moving slowly but surely toward extinguishing it.
