Unemployment in Maricopa hits record high

The unemployment rate in the city of Maricopa rose .8 percent in May, reaching 11.8 percent and setting a new record for unemployment percentages.

From April to May the city saw its workforce population increase from 19,082 to 19,100 but also saw the number of people claiming unemployment rise from 2,097 to 2,247.

However, Maricopa was not alone in rising unemployment rates.

The county saw its unemployment rate as a whole increase from 9.8 percent to 10.6 percent, and the state saw a rate increase from 7.4 percent to 8 percent.

For the year the average unemployment rate in Maricopa is 11.1 percent.
