Because September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, CureSearch is looking for 12,500 participants for their national milestone walk to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer.

Zachary Schumann’s mom Sara (See Zachary Schumann loses three-year battle with cancer), friends and community supporters are dusting off their walking shoes and heading over to Pacana Park to participate.

The local CureSearch Milestone Walk-12,500 Reasons has been set for Sunday, Sept. 14, from 7:30 until 9 a.m. at Pacana Park in Maricopa. This is a short walk around the lake so participants can arrive at any point during the scheduled times. Bring water and don’t forget sunscreen.

Walkers can join the Maricopa team, Zack’s Pack, register their own team or register as individuals. Registration is $10.

“I support this walk! My goal is to help raise money and spread awareness that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Everyone knows what a pink ribbon represents. I want everyone to know what the gold ribbon represents,” said Lisa Cannon, Maricopa MOMS Club member, who be walking on Sept. 14.

Cannon added, “I had no idea of the statistics. Did you know that 12,500 children are diagnosed with cancer per year, and one in five of those diagnosed will not survive? It scares me to death to know that. We have to find a cure.”
