A passenger was killed, and a driver suffered “life-threatening injuries” in a single-vehicle crash near Maricopa High School this afternoon.

Maricopa police and fire crews responded to a crash at West McDavid Road and North Taft Avenue just before 2:30 p.m.

“Two individuals were located in the vehicle,” said a press release issued by MPD. “The passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was transported to a valley hospital with life-threatening injuries.”

During a preliminary investigation, officers believe the car was traveling west on W. McDavid Road at a high speed when the driver failed to make a left turn just east of N. Taft Avenue.

“The vehicle traveled across the eastbound lanes and collided with a tree,” the release said. “It is unknown if impairment played a factor in this crash.”

Due to the nature of the collision, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office’s Vehicular Crimes Unit was asked to assist in the investigation, which is ongoing.

West McDavid Road near Taft Avenue is expected to remain closed for several hours.
