The Maricopa High School girls golf team hosts its first match of the season Sept. 13 against Eastmark and Marcos de Niza high schools at The Duke at Rancho El Dorado.

“This is going to be a good mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen,” coach Jeremy Basham said. “I’m excited for the leadership the upperclassmen offer to the young girls who are learning the game. We are going to work hard to have some of these young ladies compete for a spot at state. Our goal is to work hard the entire season to build towards the state meet. We will take one day at a time, one match at a time, and one swing at a time.”

Basham singled out three players as potential standouts:

  • On junior Alysaa Chavez: “She really worked hard in the offseason to develop into a force in our region. She’s definitely a future college golfer. Excited to see her keep developing and striving.”
  • On junior Jaidence McAdams: “Looking forward to having her back to build off a good season last year. She has great mechanics and things you can’t teach. She will be a factor this season.”
  • On senior Lorena Casto: “She will bring great senior leadership the team. She is the type of leader that brings everyone up a level. We’re excited to have her back in this capacity.”

After the Sept. 13 match, the girls play Upcoming home matches for the team are Sept. 15 versus Combs and Estrella Foothills and Sept. 29 against Barry Goldwater. All matches are at 3 p.m. at The Duke at Rancho El Dorado.
