Prepped to sweat, more than 30 kids competed in Maricopa High School’s second youth track meet Saturday.

The meet hosted competitions for kids third- through eighth-grade but because of some complications with scheduling it saw less than half the turn out from the previous year.

With a $10 registration fee per competitor, the track meet acts as a fundraiser to support the Maricopa High School track team.

“The money raised helps to provide warm-up uniforms, meet entry fees, transportation and team events,” said MHS track Coach Brad Chamberlain. “Unfortunately the turnout wasn’t what we were hoping for, we unknowingly scheduled it for the same day that the youth soccer season starts.”

Members of the high school track team and the younger competitors still seem to have a blast.

“We are running the event to raise money and try to get the kids excited about coming to our school in the future,” said senior Erasha Hardy, 17. “Last year we had a lot more kids but the kids that are here this year were all here last year and are experienced. So it’s running a lot smoother.”

Chamberlain makes the event mandatory for all of the team’s 50 members.

Events at the meet included all of the competitions that would be seen at the high school level. Saturday, the young athletes received more attention and athletic education from their high school mentors than they would have with a giant turnout.
