Maricopa blanks Vista Grande for first victory

The Maricopa High School Rams got the monkey after their back in Casa Grande Friday with a 35-0 victory over the Spartans of Vista Grande High School.

Maricopa (1-4) had given up an average of 51 points per game in their first four games before pitching a shutout Friday.

Vista Grande was under pressure all night as the Rams had four sacks, one and half of them from senior Kenny Gay.

Senior Geovanni Walker flashed his varied skills once again making an impact on both sides of the ball with a receiving touchdown, rushing touchdown and interception.

Junior Johnny Johnson was the player of the game for the Rams with seven catches, 123 yards and a kickoff return for a touchdown.

After a close first quarter, the Rams broke the game open with three second quarter touchdowns to take a commanding lead into the half.

They would score once more in the fourth quarter to give themselves a 35-0 win over the 2-3 Spartans.

Maricopa will be on the road Friday against Marana High School, 12000 W. Emigh Road in Tucson.
