Maricopa High School has teamed up with Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology to set up a recycling station for electronic recycle day.

Maricopa Students will be collecting unused cell phones, computers, tablets, monitors, televisions, stereo receivers, speakers, and any other electronic devices local residents have laying around. These devices will be refurbished and donated back to the community.

“The students will then be able to go thru the equipment and choose items we can refurbish in the Computer Maintenance class,” MHS teacher Brad Chamberlain said. “Once refurbished, we will work with Arizona StRUT to see they are donated out to individuals or organizations that can demonstrate both a need and lack to resources to purchase these on their own.”

The mission of Arizona StRUT is to refurbish old and unused electronics to provide to schools and non-profit organizations. They do this by promoting diversity through technical education and work experience, disposing of electronic waste responsibly, and advocating electronic recycling. Since their founding in 1997, Arizona StRUT has provided more than 50,000 computers to schools and non-profits across Arizona.

“Maricopa High School has been partnering with Arizona StRUT for four years,” Chamberlain said. “They have been very generous donating both computers and network equipment for the program.  The program has now grown enough in size to allow us to actually participate in this event and be able to give back to the community.”

The event will go from 8 a.m. to noon at Maricopa High School on Saturday, April 18. For more information on Arizona StRUT or electronic recycling day, visit www.azstrut.org.
