Update: Senior Softball All-Stars in good position after win

The Maricopa Little League Senior All-Star team beat the All-Stars of Superior 5-4 to move into the semifinals of the District Senior Softball All-Star Tournament in Coolidge.

According to Manfredi, the game was a close, hard-fought win for Maricopa.

The All-Stars held a 2-1 advantage over Superior until the bottom of the fifth inning when Superior scored twice. Maricopa was able to rally in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead. After conceding another run in the bottom of the seventh, Maricopa’s fielding was able to close out the game with a 5-4 win.

The victory will give Maricopa a much deserved day off before facing the winner of the consolation bracket.

The Maricopa Little League Senior All-Star team controls their destiny in the District Senior Softball All-Star Tournament after winning their opening round game.

Maricopa dominated Casa Grande 16-3. The girls played well in all facets of the game. Their early offensive explosion set a dominant tone to the game, and their pitching and fielding stifled their opponent en route to an easy victory.

“They started fast and stayed on top the entire game,” Vince Manfredi said. “The girls swung the bats hard and connected for many hits. The defense was tight behind the excellent pitching.”

By winning last night, Maricopa was placed in the winner’s bracket for the double elimination tournament. If Maricopa keeps winning, they will place themselves on the fast track to the finals. If they lose, they will have to fight off elimination in the loser’s bracket.

***ADVERTISEMENT***Up next for team Maricopa are the All-Stars from Superior. Superior was able to beat Coolidge last night to set up the game between unbeaten teams. The winner of the game will earn some well deserved rest as they await the victor from the loser’s bracket in the semi-finals.

“With the girls we have, we can go far,” Maricopa All-Star Coach Juan Holguin said. “If we win the district, we’ll have a shot at state. That’s our goal, and I think we can make it to state.”
