MHS principal object of senior prank

While classes may be out for the year, and graduating seniors may never return to the halls of Maricopa High School, some of them left something for their principal to remember them by – hundreds of balloons.

Several unnamed graduating seniors sneaked into the office of high school principal June Celaya days before the end of their school year and filled her office with balloons.

“She was shocked when she came in to work the next day,” said high school truancy officer William Griffin.

Griffin added that he didn’t know who the kids were, but they must have had an inside source to be able to get into the principal’s office after hours and fill it with balloons.

In fact, the seniors collaborated with anonymous staff members on ideas for harmless pranks. Once they decided on the balloons, they had to do the math to figure out how many balloons it would take to fill the room. It took 3,500 balloons.

The cost was less than $100 to purchase the balloons, and each kid chipped in $10.

They blew up the balloons by hand, filled the office and left without disturbing anything, assisted by staff members. At midnight the alarms were set, but the seniors finished with two minutes to spare.

In addition to the balloons the seniors also wrote endearing messages on the windows of the principal’s office to let Celaya know what a positive influence she had been for them.
