A Leg Up Tutoring was one of 16 businesses issued a permit to operate within city boundaries this past week. A Leg Up is owned by Maricopa resident Angela Manzer.

“So many schools are cutting back on educational offerings I thought that a tutoring company was a good fit in the city,” she said.

Manzer holds an associates degree in behavioral science and is finishing up her bachelor's degree in education. While her background in education is to be expected of a tutor it is her teaching approach that combines book learning with hands on activities  that set her apart.

“For example if I have a child struggling in with life sciences I would read with them about flowers, take them into my garden to pick some flowers, dissect those flowers, create a collage and even a poem or song,” she said.

Through her new company Manzer will offer one-on-one tutoring and group classes. Included in the curriculum is six week courses in study skills, apa writing and elementary art.”

Companies based outside city limits receiving permits were Dana Playground Equipment Inc., S R Bray LLC, Arizona’s Best Maintenance, Sureguard Security Systems LLC, Xarios Inc., Otter Creek LLC, and Residential Gas Piping LLC.

Permits are good for one year and all companies must receive a permit before doing business in the city.
