Book lovers flock to Friends’ used book sale

The early bird got the book last Saturday as the Friends of the Maricopa Public Library wrapped up another successful semi-annual used book sale at Santa Rosa Elementary School.

Proceeds of the sale amounted to $1,708. That sum will go to support programs and purchase materials for Maricopa Public Library’s collections.

Hundreds of books were offered for sale, including modern fiction, romance, reference, westerns and science fiction. Cooking, crafts and children’s books were also available.

In addition to the used books for $5 per grocery bag, including DVDs and CDs, the Friends sold both their book bags and their cookbook, “Home Cookin’ from Maricopa, AZ,” as well as the city’s definitive history book, “Reflections of a Desert Town,” by Friends member Patricia Brock.  Those sales netted $449 of the grand total.

“I am always in awe when I see the numbers of people who come out to support the library, a cornerstone of the Maricopa community. The success of the sale comes from those donating books, the dedicated team that picks up, sorts and boxes them, then sets up and dismantles the sale, MUSD allowing us to use the room, Bashas’ providing the bags to put the books in, and everyone who came out to purchase books or donate money,” said Judy Babcock, book sale chairman.

September will be the next regularly scheduled Friends of the Maricopa Public Library used book sale. Anyone who has used books to donate should drop them off at the Chamber of Commerce office next to the post office on Hathaway Avenue. Members of the Friends group will pick them up, sort and store them for the next sale.

“This was our second most successful sale to date,” said Roberta Cianciosi, president of the Friends organization. “We certainly thank the members of the community for their continued support.”
