Both the Maricopa High School girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams went undefeated in the first day of the Copa Classic Basketball tournament Monday, securing a spot in the playoffs to be held today.

The boys’ team played three games yesterday, earning 20 plus point victories against Verrado and Santa Cruz, while squeaking out a close one against Liberty.

“We had a great all around team effort in the first day of this tournament,” said boys’ assistant coach Rick Abel.

The girls were also successful, earning victories against Skyline and Arcadia, while earning a victory via forfeit against Liberty, who failed to show up.

“Our girls played great,” said girl’s head coach Jen Miller.

With their showing in the first day of the tournament the girls secured the number two seed in the playoff bracket and will face San Pasqual at 11 a.m. in the Ak-Chin Gym.

The boys’ team earned the number one seed in their playoff bracket and will enjoy a first round bye while they wait for the winner of a game between Verrado and Gila Bend.

The boys’ first playoff game will tip off at noon in the main gym.
