The Maricopa High boys soccer team look to snap its five-game losing streak Wednesday at Parker High School.

After winning its first game of the season 3-2 against River Valley on Nov. 20, the Rams have lost all five of their games by a combined score of 19-5, including shutouts by Antelope and Yuma Catholic.

“The team is struggling with locating the ball and creating opportunity,” Coach Jack Berg said.

Wednesday’s contest marks the halfway point of the season. Maricopa is currently last in its division, with Yuma Catholic (4-0) in first place in 3A West, but Berg said the team is still in contention for a playoff spot.

“Our goal is to take advantage of the holiday break to add various set plays and work on our conditioning to finish the year strong,” Berg said.

Berg said the team is beginning to take more shots around the goal, which opens up more opportunity to score.

After Wednesday’s game, the Rams will have a break until a rematch with Wickenburg Jan. 5. In the first game between the schools Nov. 26, Wickenburg scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-1 victory (see “Boys soccer unable to stop Wickenburg“).
