Butterfield Elementary busy raising funds and spirit

At Butterfield Elementary School students and staff have been busy keeping track of their mascot, Buzz, and fundraising for both the American Lung Association and breast cancer research.

Every Friday is a friendly Butterfield school spirit competition, and students are encouraged to wear their Butterfield Bobcat school colors. The class with the highest percentage of students participating wins Buzz the Bobcat, the school’s travelling mascot.

For seven weeks Amanda Ball’s second grade class won.  However, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, Buzz vanished.  School staff called in detectives Sgt. Stephen Judd and Sgt. Hal Koozer of the Maricopa Police Department. After a full investigation, leads pointed to the competition, Elizabeth Zimpleman’s fifth grade class. Later that week a video revealed Buzz’s location.

Although Buzz is safely home back at Butterfield after his “vacation,” the next competition was tied with Ball and Zimpleman agreeing to share Buzz for the week.

As this competition heats up, updates will be available on the Buzz, School Spirit Bobcat link.  Pictures of Buzz’s travels throughout the building are posted weekly, as well as a blog.

On Wednesday Butterfield students and staff participated in a ‘Baseball for Bob’ fundraiser to support attendance clerk, Joan Miner, who recently lost her husband to a battle with lung disease. Bob Miner’s favorite sport was baseball, particularly the Cubs. Students and staff could donate $1 and wear their best baseball gear to school in his honor. The event raised $318, which will be donated to the American Lung Association in Miner’s name.

Butterfield staff members also participated in the Lee National Denim Day for Breast Cancer Awareness, a nationwide fundraiser for breast cancer, sponsored by Lee Jeans. Each staff member could donate $5 to be able to wear jeans. Proceeds will go to The Women’s Cancer Programs of EIF (Entertainment Industry Foundations) for breast cancer research.
