The Maricopa High School choir performed 11 pieces, including Christmas music, during its winter concert Tuesday in the Performing Arts Center. The singers were accompanied by pianist Louvenia Samford and directed by MHS Music Director Ivan Pour.

Tonight, the MHS Band will perform its “Pass in Review” Concert at 7 p.m. in the PAC.

On a day-to-day basis, Pour said his choir students “lose themselves in the music” as they practice in the school’s choir room. Pour said that on really good days, students will so enjoy learning their assigned songs they are caught by surprise when the school bell rings.

Choir parent Amanda Kochheiser said her son Shayn joined the choir this year as freshman.

“Any kind of fine arts gives a sense of involvement – something to work together at,” she said.

Shayn added, “I’ve been singing without mom and dad knowing since I was 8.” He sings alto and baritone in the MHS Choir, depending on the song. “If I could, I’d probably teach kids how to sing.”

The performers have banded together in the Choir Club to help raise money for the group. Pour said club members will use their own suggestion box to choose pieces for the May 7 spring concert and then pay for the sheet music.
