Maricopa City Council honored Maricopa’s teachers with a proclamation during a meeting on May 2.

The proclamation dedicated the week of May 8 as Teacher Appreciation Week, which is also recognized nationally. It also highlighted the work and achievements of teachers in the community.

“The city of Maricopa recognizes and supports its teachers in educating the children of this community and acknowledges their devotion toward the betterment of our next and future generations,” the proclamation read.

“Our city’s future depends on providing quality education to all students,” it continued.

Teacher Appreciation Week began in 1984 when the National Parent Teacher Association dedicated the first full week of May to honoring teachers who “lend their passion and skills to educating … children.”

“Where would we be without (teachers),” Smith said after presenting the proclamation. “We need them.”
