Girls travel softball team forming

A girls softball travel team is starting up this month in Maricopa.

The Copa Rattlers will be a developmental and competitive 10U-12U girls youth softball team playing out of Tempe Kiwanis Park.

“We wanted to start a league that did not exist at this age bracket so that our children could play in tournaments year round,” said Nicole Blackwell, one of the founders. “We all have girls who love softball and played on the same team last season.”

Depending on the number of girls who sign up, and any donations, the cost will be $160, but could vary by $15 less or more, Blackwell said. The price includes all costs associated with the season.

Practices will be in Maricopa and games in Tempe, with a focus on fun and fine-tuning fundamentals while making new friends in the community. Practice starts in  August, with games starting in September.

“Our goals are to keep the team together through all age brackets and move the team up into the next division as necessary,” Blackwell said. “At which point a new 10U team would be opened.”

Team founders include Blackwell and her husband Ryan, Bri and Jason Roberts, and Timi and Derek Jeske.

Derek is the head coach. The group is in the midst of making Copa Rattlers a nonprofit.
