Council approves $9,900 to bring reduced-rate swim lessons to Maricopa

More than 500 Maricopa youth will have the chance to take swimming lessons this summer from instructors including a two-time Olympic gold medalist at a significantly reduced rate, thanks to the City Council.

That’s because the Council recently approved $9,900 to subsidize services to be offered by Gold Medal Swim School of Chandler, to be offered locally at the Ak-Chin Recreation Center.
In return, the school would agree to provide a 40-percent discount for 504 local children.

For Maricopa residents only, a city report states that the water awareness program was expected to cost $70 for eight sessions with a student-to-teacher ratio of four to one and will be offered on select mornings and afternoons in June and July.

The agreement, however, has not yet been finalized according to Mike Walker, owner of the swim school, who said the actual cost to attend all sessions will be $75. The location and specific dates and times are also yet to be determined, Walker said.

Although registration from youth in nearby cities including Casa Grande will be accepted, they will not be able to take advantage of the discounted rate.

The city chose Gold Medal to provide the service, in part, because it was the only vendor willing to provide service in our area, a staff report states.
