Gusse: Veterans, baseball, Fourth and more

291

Another fun filled Fourth of July planned for the city of Maricopa. In addition to all the activities, I would like to remind everyone about a few things.

Operation Welcome Home will be honoring returning veterans to Maricopa at the Aug. 7 regular council meeting. We need your help: If you have a relative, friend or neighbor who is returning to Maricopa after a deployment or terminating their active duty, we would love to honor him/her.

For more information please contact Paul Jepson with the city of Maricopa at 520-568-9098.

Do you have an old cellphone sitting in your junk drawer? Do you want to recycle it, while helping our troops talk to their loved ones? Cell Phones for Soldiers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing deployed and returning troops cost-free methods to communicate with family while serving in the United States military.

We are having a used cellphone recycling drive. Drop off your old phone, battery and charger (or the cell phone by itself) to one of the following locations:

• Maricopa City Hall, 45145 W. Madison Ave.

• Maricopa Public Library, 41600 W. Smith-Enke Road

• Maricopa Chamber of Commerce, 44870 W. Hathaway, Suite 5

• Cilantros Restaurant, 21044 N. John Wayne Parkway

The Maricopa American Legion Post No. 133 has two teams playing Legion baseball throughout Pinal County. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Paul Babeu, has generously donated $2,500 for our Legion ball. On the Fourth of July we plan to publically thank the PCSO for its donation in assisting our young men play baseball during these summer months.
