County seeking leads in animal cruelty case

Pinal County Animal Care and Control needs the public’s help in an ongoing investigation into possible animal cruelty.

A week ago they responded to to a stray animal call.

Officers found a small, female puppy, approximately three months old.  Someone had written a two-word expletive on her fur in wide, black permanent marker.

The puppy was found near in San Tan Valley.  In addition to the marker, the puppy has three large tumor-like lumps – two on her back and one on her belly.

“The puppy went to the vet today to have the lumps checked out,” said Ruth Stalter, Director of Pinal County Animal Care and Control.  “It would be highly unusual for a three-month old puppy to have cancerous lumps that look like this.  The vet believes the lumps were caused by trauma.”

Stalter said that officers would appreciate tips from anyone who might know whose dog this is or what might have happened to her.

“She’s already stolen our hearts.  The staff is calling her Nugget. She’s a very loving dog who appears to have suffered from neglect or abuse,” Stalter said.  “If she is determined to be healthy, she will be put up for public adoption.”

Callers may anonymously report information on the puppy’s history or owners by calling 520-866-7618. This is also the number to call to report information about any animal cruelty in Maricopa or elsewhere in the county.

Donations for Nugget or any other impounded animals may be made by mailing contributions to Pinal County Animal Care and Control at 764 South Eleven Mile Corner Road, Casa Grande, Ariz. 85122. Nugget’s x-rays were $200 and her additional medical treatment will include surgery to remove the growths, spay and follow up care.

Note: In Maricopa any animal control emergencies can be reported after hours by calling 520-509-3555 or 888-431-1311 and following the automated prompts.
