Pinal County Sheriff’s Office this morning released the ages of two teens involved in a fatal crash Sunday afternoon. Law enforcement now suspects the driver was impaired.
Maricopa police and fire crews responded to the crash at West McDavid Road and North Taft Avenue just before 2:30 p.m.
Officers found the 13-year-old passenger dead at the scene. The 18-year-old driver was transported to a hospital in “extremely critical condition,” according to PCSO spokesperson Lauren Reimer. The teens were not identified.
Reimer said the vehicle was travelling westbound on McDavid Road before the driver “lost control at the curve, traveled across eastbound lanes and collided with a tree.”
“DUI impairment is suspected, and blood evidence was collected for testing,’ Reimer said. “Speed was also a likely factor.”
Pinal County Vehicular Crimes Task Force is investigating the crash.
