Final pre-election day thoughts

358

As I sit here writing my last opinion piece of this election I am reminded of a Sinatra song (My Way) “the end is near… I’ll state my case….”

At the last forum I stood my ground and continued to speak the truth. I never made false promises as so many politicians tend to do in order to get elected. All in all, I stayed true to myself and my convictions, and this was the only way that I could run my campaign with utmost honesty and integrity – I did it my way.

The Council candidates were asked to submit our opinion on SB 1070.  Maricopa did not and will not have a choice on this law; this question is irrelevant since it is not on the ballot, and it may or may not go into effect in July. The two items that are on the ballot are Proposition 100 and the extension of the mayor’s term from two years to a four-year term, but these pertinent questions weren’t addressed now or at the forum either.

Maricopa, it is time that we take back our city. In this process I have exposed information that all residents should be made aware of. I encourage the people of Maricopa to seek information and, more importantly – answers, to pertinent questions.

I recently requested information in regard to the council’s budget. Council’s 2009-10 Fiscal Year Budget for Memberships and Dues is $93,000. This budget does not include any travel, training or education expenses. I ask you, Maricopa, do you see a need for a $93,000 membership and dues budget at the expense of the taxpayer?  Keep in mind that city council can stop wasteful spending (starting with council’s budget), and I am 100 percent committed to do just that. This is just food for thought as you go into that voting booth on Tuesday.

I am one amongst the 32,000 people that moved to Maricopa, and one person can make a difference. Through this campaign process I wanted to give something back to the community and, in turn, I produced key chain rings that will give you a discount on your beverage at many local Maricopa eateries. Pick up your key ring at the “Waterboy” (located on Honeycutt).

Special thanks to my family, friends, campaign committee, Rosalin Sanhadja and Ken Hunt.  This has been an interesting and crazy ride!

Julia Romero-Gusse is a candidate for the Maricopa City Council.
