Fire-restrictions on BLM land in effect

356

Due to the increasing danger of wildfires, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has implemented fire prevention restrictions within central Arizona.

Spring rains resulted in the growth of wildflowers, grasses, and other vegetation that is now drying, dying, and poised to become fuel for wildfires as temperatures increase. The threat of wildfires in the Sonoran Desert has increased to Very High and Extreme levels. To protect the public, natural resources, and reduce the risks of fires, BLM implemented the following restrictions within public lands administered by the Phoenix District effective Friday, May 21, 2010:

1. Campfires, the use of charcoal broilers or wood stoves are prohibited.  At this time, the use of propane and petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices is allowed;

2. Smoking is prohibited; smoking is allowed only inside of a closed vehicle;

3. Target shooting and discharging firearms are prohibited, except in taking game in accordance with Arizona hunting laws.

Visitors are asked to continue using care when recreating on public lands. Be aware that driving off-road over dry grass could ignite a fire. The fire prevention restrictions or prohibitions remain in effect until the fire order is lifted. Restrictions may vary in other parts of the state, depending on the level of fire danger. It is important for public land users to be aware of the restrictions for each area where they plan to camp or visit. Current fire conditions/restriction information is online at www.azfireinfo.com  or click here.

The BLM greatly appreciates your cooperation in protecting public lands by helping to prevent wildfires. To report a wildfire call 800-309-7081.
