Maricopa High School varsity football came up short opening night at home.

The Rams’ sophomore quarterback, Jose Cardona Jr., did his best to match McClintock High School’s red-hot offense Thursday. He threw nearly 200 yards for one touchdown and led the team in rushing with 53 yards on 11 carries.

But opposing QB Jaxon Knutson threw a whopping 478 yards en route to seven touchdowns and a 58-31 win for the Chargers.

“The challenges we faced last night are all fixable,” Coach Tevin Rutherford told InMaricopa. “Some mistakes were made on both sides of the ball, but as far as effort goes, I am very impressed.”

The Rams look to bounce back Sept. 1 as they open up another home game against Trevor G. Browne High School (Phoenix) at 7 p.m.
