Forum open to residents interested in proposed middle school site

The city of Maricopa and the Maricopa Unified School District are holding an open forum at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room at Global Water to discuss a proposed site for a new middle school in Maricopa.

The main topic of discussion will be the proximity of the site to high voltage power lines. District officials and city representatives said they plan to attend to offer their opinions and possible alternatives to the site which has been proposed by El Dorado Holdings within The Lakes at Rancho El Dorado. The exact site is on North Rancho El Dorado Parkway near the Global Water Facility.

MUSD Public Relations Director Tom Beckett said at this point, the forum is purely for discussion and there are no plans to make any decisions. The hope, Beckett said, is to get enough public input to give the district a direction in which it can move forward.

The school would be the third middle school for Maricopa; the second school in the Tortosa subdivision will open for the 2008-2009 school year. During the meeting of the Board of Education on Jan. 9, it was noted that Maricopa likely will not need another middle school for at least another year.

Start time for the forum is 6:30 p.m., in the conference room at Global Water.
