According to data from the American Automobile Associaton, Arizona gas prices are on pace to break highs established in 2008.
During most of 2010, gas prices hung around the $2.76 per gallon mark. Prices began to rise sharply in December, January and February.
The current average price for a gallon of gas in Arizona is $3.45, six cents below the nationwide average of $3.51, but 40 cents more than the cost per gallon at the same time in 2008, the year Arizona gas price records were set at $4.09 per gallon.
After reaching a high of $4.09 in July 2008, the price of gas fell to less than $2 in March of 2009 before going back up to $3 in March 2010.
The current increase means it costs almost $12 more to fill a 16-gallon tank today than it did last year at this time.
