Goddard resigns from school board

Moments before a special meeting of the Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board was to convene, Board Member Geoff Goddard announced his resignation and left.

Goddard said he objected to the “predetermined selection” of a deputy superintendent.

“This is all part of an act,” he said, reading from a prepared statement.

The special meeting was called for the board to consider hiring a deputy superintendent whose responsibilities would be similar to those of the superintendent.

***ADVERTISEMENT***“I have decided to resign my position immediately,” Goddard said, adding his decision in no way reflected on current Superintendent Jeff Kleck or district staff.

Goddard had served on the board for three years.

During his service on the board, he said, the district had made jumps in performance but still needed to improve.

Goddard said he had always made his decision based on what was best for the children of the district, but believed what the board was considering tonight was not in the best interest of the students.
