Golfers tee off in Maricopa

Maricopa High head golf coach Michael Russoniello is starting a summer club for golfers in grades 7 through 12. Both beginning and experienced golfers are invited to participate.

The golf club starts at The Duke on June 11. The club will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 2 p.m., with an optional Thursday practice. Golfers will start at 2 p.m. with chipping and putting. Russoniello noted the golfers will play a minimum of two holes, which should take about 30 minutes.

Russoniello said as of now there isn’t a cost for the summer club, but there will be a Drive-A-Thon to raise money for the golf program. Any money raised will go to purchase supplies for the kids through the Maricopa Golf Booster Club.

“My goal is to build a strong varsity golf program, but to do that I need to get kids actively involved in golf when they are in middle school or entering high school,” Russoniello said.

Russoniello added that incoming freshmen should consider joining the golf team, regardless of their previous golfing experience. “High school juniors and seniors should also consider playing, even if it is their first time picking up the golf clubs, because it is a great resumé builder when applying for colleges,” Russoniello said.
