Flashing lights, buzzing slot machines and 24-hour service, the energy costs are inevitable. Combine that with lodging, pools and restaurants and it’s no surprise casinos are searching for innovations to help cut costs and improve their bottom line.

“Most people probably think the only ‘green’ that casinos care about is cash,” said Jonathan Schultz, maintenance technician at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort. “But conservation has become a top priority at Harrah’s Ak-Chin and an important part of our culture.”

Schultz used his previous experience to help research and find areas where he can help Harrah’s Ak-Chin save. After weeks of research and analyzing costs, Schultz devised ways to save green by going green.

His plan: To reduce electricity and labor costs by replacing light bulbs in various locations throughout the casino with new LED lighting and conserving energy through temperature control.

“Those efforts have not only helped cut business costs but also helped make a positive impact on the environment,” said Robert Livingston, Harrah’s general manager.
