The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office released the names today of the two brothers who drowned New Year’s Day in an irrigation canal near Hidden Valley.

A third brother was able to crawl out of the canal.

The oldest brother who died, Anthony Love, would have turned 11 Wednesday. His youngest brother Calib Love, who also drowned, was 6.

Ten-year-old Emmanuel Stower survived. He attends Santa Cruz Elementary School, said Ember Conley, Maricopa Unified School District’s deputy superintendent and director of assessment and accountability.

Anthony previously attended Butterfield Elementary. Several people posting on InMaricopa.com’s Facebook page indicated the other brothers went to Rise and Shine school, which is housed at Mt. Moriah Community Church.

Conley said all principals in the district have been notified of the deaths.

“We have counselors on site at the two schools to work with the staff,” Conley said. “We will provide support to the family during this horrific tragedy.”

The brothers were out on a walk when Calib slipped into the canal about two or three blocks from the family’s home Monday. His two older brothers immediately jumped in after him despite not knowing how to swim.

Elias Johnson, PCSO spokesman, said the accident occurred about 1:45 p.m.

Southwest Ambulance paramedics dragged the canal near where the boys slid in. The dive team from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office found the youngest brother at 4:50 p.m. and his 10-year-old brother seven minutes later.
